In preparation for Bicycle NSW’s next photo competition theme “Adventure Biking”, it was time for something fresh.... A new route?  A mountain bike challenge? Or trying an e-bike? The latter won.

School holidays, an Easter long weekend and the autumn weather beckoning, I stepped out of my comfort zone. Leaving behind the familiarity of the Parramatta Valley Cycleway and Sydney Olympic Park, I boarded the Rivercat. Water, snack and sunblock packed, I was ready for my city e-bike adventure with my fourteen year old son.

Arriving at Circular Quay we opened the Lime bike app to search for two available bikes. The first challenge: to find ones with helmets, not an unusual problem according to Sydneysiders.

Helmets on and bikes hired, I navigated out of the touristy area of Circular Quay and we cycled towards Dawes Point.

It became easier with less pedestrians as we headed to Barangaroo Reserve, this fairly new waterfront park with great walking and cycling paths. Beautiful scenic views of the Harbour and Anzac bridges, provided a great backdrop.

Construction around Barangaroo proved challenging. Narrow footpaths and barriers forced us to dismount and push the bikes to Kent St Cycleway, so we could continue our ride to Darling Harbour, where we explored around the Endeavour Replica.

We then continued to cycle through Pyrmont into Pirrama Park and enjoyed the view over Jones Bay, and finally headed back towards Millers Point.

For those of you unaware when using bike share, there are rules about completing your ride and parking in restricted areas. So my suggestion is to PLAN. Plan your route, know exactly where the cycle paths are, be aware that even though you can accompany your under 16 child on footpaths, it can be difficult navigating around crowds and construction zones. It would be a good idea to brief them on the road rules and cycling etiquette.

I used cycleway finder to work out the route and rest stops. It was a fun adventure and the assistance of the electric bike was definitely a positive riding up hills. But the highlight of the day was definitely sharing the adventure of a new route with my son and trying an e-bike!
