What we've updated for Members

For the 2026 / 2027 financial year, based on feedback from all our Members, we have invested in the following improvements to our comprehensive insurance policy for people cycling to ensure the best insurance coverage for cyclists:

  1. Death benefit limit increased to $50,000
  2. Permanent disability limit increased to $100,000
  3. Non-medicare expenses limit increased to $10,000
  4. Added $500 for bicycle hire (in case of theft or collision)

Bicycle NSW is proud to help members receive insurance claim payments every month. In the past four years, Members have been paid out almost $300,000 in claims across public liability and personal accident claims.

Members have also received personalised legal advice and support in their times of need.

Examples of claims received by Members

Personal Accident

  • A Member stopped at traffic lights/crossing, reached over to press the button, lost balance and landed on their right wrist $770 was reimbursed for non medicare medical expenses.
  • A Member suffered a fractured wrist and a laceration on their chin after colliding with a car that had to brake suddenly whilst the Member was on their way to work. $5,743 was paid for loss of income and $250 was reimbursed for Non Medicare Medical expenses.
  • A death benefit was paid in respect of a Member passing away from being hit by a motor vehicle. Total incurred amount was $60,000 comprising of funeral and death benefit lump sum payments to their next of kin.

Public Liability

  • A Liability claim was submitted whereby a Member was riding along a bike path and lost control. They fell in the path of the claimant who then fell over the Member. Total incurred amount was $5,620 which related to medical expenses and third party property damage.
  • A Liability claim was submitted where a third party sustained shoulder injuries when a Member collided into them as they suddenly changed direction - $81,253 was paid in damages to the third party for medical expenses and loss of income.
