Regular bike maintenance is essential for a safe and enjoyable riding experience. Whether you're a seasoned cyclist or just starting out, these tips and resources will help you keep your bike in excellent condition.

Quick Pre-Ride Check: ABCDS

Bikes should undergo a quick check before every ride. This is to ensure your bike is in top working condition to reduce the risk of mechanical faults and accidents. We want all riders to be safe when cycling their bike.

Before every ride we encourage all riders to do a simple ABCDS check  That’s:

  • A - Air - Tyres should be inflated and feel very firm to touch. Maximum pressure is written on the tyre.
  • B - Brakes - Test both front and back brakes. Brake pads should be clear from the rim.
  • C - Chain - See that it moves smoothly.
  • D - Drop - Lift the bike and drop from a few centimetres. Listen for odd sounds. Secure loose fittings
  • S - Saddle - Check that the saddle is secure and at the correct height (hip level). Shouldn’t be overextended. Seat needs to be bolted tightly

Bikes should have a more thorough check monthly, along with an annual check-up at a bike store.

Monthly Maintenance

In addition to your pre-ride checks, give your bike a more thorough inspection every month. This includes cleaning the drivetrain, checking for wear on tyres and brake pads, and ensuring all bolts are tightened.

Annual Tune-Up

Take your bike to a professional for an annual tune-up. Local bike shops and cycling groups often offer maintenance services and workshops.

Learn Basic Maintenance

Want to handle minor repairs yourself? Check out the following resources.

How To Videos

If you're looking to learn how to do some basic bike maintenance there are plenty of videos online to guide you. For a start, we recommend learning:

  • how to change a flat tyre
  • use a puncture kit
  • how to lubricate your chain

Bike Maintenance Courses

Yet sometimes the best way to learn is through a physical bike maintenance course. Bicycle NSW does not run these courses but there are many people who do.

Places to check:

  • Your local council - the City of Sydney run regular bike maintenance courses and your local council might do the same
  • Your local Bicycle User Group - many BUGs run regularly riding skills and maintenance course open to the general public
  • Your local bike shop - often bike ships run courses to teach riders basic maintenance

Stay safe and ride confidently! Proper maintenance not only extends the life of your bike but also ensures a safer ride.
