Empowering Women Through Bicycle Riding
Today, on International Women’s Day, we celebrate the achievements of women worldwide and reflect on the progress made toward gender equality. This year’s theme, “Accelerate Action”, emphasises the urgency of breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for women in all aspects of life. At Bicycle NSW, we are proud to contribute to this mission by empowering women to embrace bike riding as a means of independence, health and community connection.

Bicycle NSW’s Commitment to Women in Cycling
Bicycle NSW has long been dedicated to creating safer, more inclusive bike riding opportunities for women. Recognising that safety concerns, cultural norms and infrastructure challenges can often deter women from riding a bicycle, we have developed key initiatives to address these barriers and encourage women of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy the freedom and joy of riding.
Key Initiatives:
- Bicycle NSW Bicycle User Groups (BUGs): These groups are the backbone of cycling communities across NSW. BUGs offer a welcoming and supportive environment for women to ride together, stay safe, and share their passion for riding. By joining a BUG, women can access regular group rides, safety tips, skill-building workshops, and a chance to connect with like-minded bicycle users. The shared camaraderie and encouragement make cycling a truly empowering experience for women of all ages and abilities.
- Spring Cycle: As NSW’s largest recreational bicycle riding event, Spring Cycle is inclusive for everyone, including women looking to join a fun and supportive community. With ride options for all skill levels, it’s a celebration of riding that promotes health, sustainability, and social connection.
- Advocacy for Safer Streets: Bicycle NSW actively campaigns for better cycling infrastructure, such as separated bicycle paths and improved lighting, making riding safer and more accessible for women in NSW communities.
- Inclusive Riding Programs: Bicycle NSW supports efforts to ensure cycling is accessible to all, providing opportunities and resources for women with disabilities to enjoy riding.

Why Bikes Matter for Women
Bike riding offers women countless benefits, from improving physical and mental well-being to fostering social connections and reducing transportation costs.
