It was our great pleasure to attend the launch of another Cycling Without Age Trishaw.

Cycling Without Age Trishaw Launch

In spite of COVID-19 challenges Cycling Without Age is expanding.  The Hon. Matt Thistlethwaite MP, Federal Member for Kingsford Smith, helped BIKEast secure the $17,000 necessary to purchase another trishaw to expand the program.

BIKEast is an affiliate chapter of the global Cycling Without Age movement to help more people experience bike riding who may be unable to ride themselves.  Adrian Boss, a longtime member of BIKEast, has championed the expansion of the program, training new pilots who volunteer to provide rides.

Launch attendees included the Hon. Ron Hoenig MP, member for Heffron, the Hon. Dr Marjorie O’Neill MP, Member for Coogee, Cllr Dillon Parker Mayor of Randwick, Cllr Christina Curry of Bayside Council, Bicycle NSW President Melinda Tarrant and GM of Public Affairs Bastien Wallace. A team of BIKEast volunteers provided rides for free to residents of the St Josephs home in Randwick, and the Windgap home.

In spite of everything that has happened since the scheme launched in 2017, 33 volunteer pilots have been trained, over 203 events held and over 464 passengers have been able to enjoy a ride.

“It is always a delight to attend these events and experience first hand how much joy Cycling Without Age brings to participants,” said Bicycle NSW General Manager of Public Affairs, Bastien Wallace.

“We appreciate all of the effort it has taken to achieve this inclusive vision of cycling and applaud everyone who has worked so hard to make this happen,” said Bastien.

Help CWA with trishaw storage.

Cycling Without Age needs help locating somewhere in the southern half of the Eastern Suburbs to store one of their bikes. The space must be reasonably accessible to two or more of its major parks. It needs to be the dimensions of a small car-park, have access to lights for after dark, able to be secured or to have a cage built to lock up the trishaw.

Cycling Without Age are also recruiting for volunteers happy to help pilot the two trishaws. For more information check out their page about the program in Sydney or to help with either request please contact Adrian.
