Our mission is to create a better environment for all bicycle riders

Bicycle NSW is the leading voice for bicycle riders in NSW. For 50 years, our small but highly effective team has been dedicated to making our state safer, more accessible, and more bike-friendly - for everyone.

Bicycle NSW's advocacy influences critical policy changes, infrastructure improvements, and community engagement initiatives that benefit cyclists all across this beautiful state.

We are almost solely funded by public donations and membership fees. It is tricky to balance the books. Your donations will help ensure that we are able to employ full-time advocacy staff, on the ground, here in NSW, to represent the interests of our Members.

“I realise the cost of living is impacting many of us, but please donate if you can. Your donations are making a real difference and will leave a legacy for years to come. Every donation is fully tax-deductible and it allows Bicycle NSW to fearlessly and independently advocate for you.”

The End of Financial Year: Here for another 50 years with your support

This year Bicycle NSW is proud to celebrate an important milestone: 50 years of creating a better environment for all bicycle riders in NSW.

Make a tax-deductible donation before June 30 2026, and you will ensure that Bicycle NSW can keep up its advocacy work. Every donation over $2 is fully tax-deductible, meaning you can support bicycle riding advocacy while reducing your taxable income.

Whether a one-time gift or an ongoing contribution, your generosity will help us push for better riding conditions across NSW.

The run up to EOFY is always a great moment to reflect on what we have been up to over 12 very busy months – and what we plan to focus on for the 2026-2027 financial year.

Please enjoy our snapshot of Bicycle NSW’s activity in 2025-26!

The Australian Bicycle Advocacy Fund

The Bicycle NSW Environmental Trust is now trading as the Australian Bicycle Advocacy Fund.

The Trust was established in 2003 to promote bicycle riding as an environmentally beneficial means of transport. The Trust helps Bicycle NSW and other nation-wide advocacy groups and peak bodies to continue our valuable work of getting more people riding bikes through advocacy, community building and educational programs.

Why your donation matters

Every dollar donated strengthens our ability to advocate, improve infrastructure, and create lasting change for the cycling community. Your donations will directly support impactful campaigns that have already driven significant change. This is just a selection of the projects we have influenced and the campaigns we have run over the last few years:

After 40 years of advocacy, construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway northern access ramp is complete. This long-awaited infrastructure is safe and accessible, and allows bike riders of all ages and abilities to cycle across the iconic bridge. Bicycle NSW's successful campaign highlights the power of persistent advocacy to create meaningful change.

Bicycle NSW is assisting all levels of government to develop sensible regulation, policy and legislations for e-bikes and batteries, amend road rules, and establish education programs across the state. The overarching message? The #bikeboom must not be put back in the box.  Changes to the regulatory framework must expand the industry and enable more riders, of all ages and abilities, to use micromobility on the road to Net Zero.

Bicycle NSW’s newest campaign focuses on eliminating hazardous bollards that pose a risk to riders. Poorly placed bollards can cause accidents, obstruct pathways, and discourage cycling. Bollards discriminate against those with diverse mobility requirements, for example those in wheelchairs. We are working with Bicycle User Group Bike North to develop new guidelines to inform the use of bollards on cycling infrastructure.

Encouraging children to cycle to school is a key focus for Bicycle NSW. In addition to our relentless advocacy for separated bicycle infrastructure, lower speed limits, and improved crossings, we are working on place-based behaviour change initiatives to help students and families ditch the car. In 2025, we developed Active Travel Plans for 8 schools in Western Sydney. These identified barriers to active transport, mapped safe routes to school, recommended infrastructure improvements and created an action plan for councils and schools.

Bicycle NSW continues to push NSW Police to enforce Minimum Passing Distance laws. It is essential that motorists know that it is not optional to maintain a safe gap when overtaking bike riders. We advocate for high-quality education campaigns for all road users. And we support Members who have experienced a frightening close pass with legal advice and representation at the highest level.

Dismantling, boxing and weighing bikes to board TrainLink trains and coaches is a major deterrent to tourism and sustainable  transport in regional areas. The Out With Boxing Bikes petition demonstrated the huge appetite for taking bikes onboard without unnecessary packaging. Thanks to Bicycle NSW’s efforts, transport authorities finally agreed to review policy and a limited trial was launched. We will keep up the pressure up for a permanent solution across all NSW TrainLink train and coach services.

  • Rail trails: NSW is now catching up with other states

Bicycle NSW played a key role in the passing of the Transport Administration Amendment (Rail Trails) Bill 2022. This legislation supports the conversion of disused railway corridors into safe and scenic walking and cycling paths, promoting both local active transport and regional tourism. The campaign’s success has paved the way for councils across NSW to develop rails trails, and we have supported many of these through the planning process.

Bicycle NSW has been at the forefront of advocating for people who walk and ride in the lead-up to recent elections.  We ran effective campaigns for the 2023 NSW state election, the 2024 NSW council elections and the 2025 federal election. This work has allowed us to identify champions for active transport at all levels of government, and build relationships with politicians who can help us achieve our mission. We have a seat at the table!

These campaigns demonstrate Bicycle NSW’s commitment to making bike riding safer, more accessible, and better integrated into everyday life.

Bicycle NSW celebrates the GreenWay

In December 2025, the GreenWay, a 6km walking and cycling corridor linking the Cooks River with the Parramatta River, was officially opened. After twenty-five years of campaigning, this was a landmark moment for advocates in the Inner West  (Image: Bicycle NSW)

Inappropriate terminal treatments in Marsden Park

Bicycle NSW is working to stop the overuse of bollards on cycling infrastructure. Treatment such as these in Blacktown are tricky to navigate with a bulky e-bike, and impossible with a cargo bike, disability scooter, tricycle or double pram (Image: CycleSydney)
