E-bike Safety: Prioritising Safe Riding and Maintenance
E-bikes have transformed the way people travel, offering an efficient and sustainable means of transportation. From carrying heavier loads to tackling steep hills and covering longer distances, e-bikes provide unmatched convenience. However, they require additional care and consistent maintenance to ensure optimal performance, safety, and longevity.

Recent E-bike Accidents
Last Friday seven people escaped a serious fire in a terrace home which fire authorities determined was started by an electrical bicycle charger left charging overnight. It took six fire trucks and thirty firefighters to put the fire out before it spread to homes next door.
Fire and Rescue NSW have recorded twelve e-bike related fires since 2017, including six in 2019, but none in 2020. If you ride an e-bike, now is a great time to carry out a safety check, and there are some good resources online if you want more information.
Tips for Safe E-bike Usage and Maintenance
- Follow Manufacturer Guidelines:
Always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for operating and charging your e-bike. If you’ve lost the manual, contact the manufacturer or retailer for a replacement, or check online resources. - Use Approved Chargers:
Stick to chargers and accessories provided with your e-bike. If replacements are necessary, consult a reputable supplier to ensure compatibility and safety. - Invest in a Wall Timer:
Use a timer for your power outlet to automatically stop charging once the battery is fully charged. This simple precaution reduces the risks of overcharging and overheating. - Store Batteries in a Cool Area:
Lithium-ion batteries can be damaged by heat. Avoid charging or storing your battery in confined spaces, direct sunlight, or a hot car. Ensure proper ventilation and follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for waterproofing without retaining excess heat. - Avoid Prolonged Throttle Use:
Running your e-bike continuously at full throttle generates heat and reduces battery life. Use throttle sparingly and give your bike breaks to cool down. - Schedule Regular Maintenance: Have your e-bike serviced regularly by a qualified professional. Avoid modifications that exceed design specifications or overload the bike.
“E-bikes have a lot of benefits, but like any electronic machine they need to be operated and maintained correctly,” said Bicycle NSW General Manager of Public Affairs, Bastien Wallace.
“Wet conditions across NSW provide a perfect time to check on your bike’s charging and servicing directions, to maximize battery life and your safety whenever you ride,” said Bastien.
Why E-bike Safety Matters
"E-bikes offer incredible benefits, but like any electronic device, they need to be operated and maintained correctly to ensure safety," said Bastien Wallace, General Manager of Public Affairs at Bicycle NSW.
Proper care of your e-bike not only protects you but also ensures the safety of those around you. Following established guidelines helps extend the life of your e-bike, allowing you to enjoy its benefits confidently.
Current NSW Laws for E-bikes and Batteries
E-bike usage in NSW is regulated by specific laws and standards designed to prioritise safety:
- E-bike Classification:
- E-bikes must meet NSW’s definition of a "pedal-assisted bicycle."
- The motor must assist only while pedaling and automatically disengage at speeds above 25km/h.
- The motor's power output is restricted to a maximum of 250 watts.
- Battery Safety Standards:
- Under the Gas and Electricity (Consumer Safety) Act 2017, lithium-ion batteries in e-bikes are classified as "declared electrical articles."
- Starting February 2025, all e-bikes and their batteries sold in NSW must meet rigorous safety standards, including mandatory testing, certification, and labeling.
- Suppliers must provide clear safety guidelines covering proper use, storage, charging, fire prevention, and disposal.
- Road Rules for E-bikes:
- E-bike riders must comply with the same road rules as traditional cyclists, including wearing a helmet, adhering to traffic signals, and using bike lanes where applicable.
- Riding on footpaths is generally prohibited unless explicitly permitted.
- Riders must use lights and reflectors during nighttime or in low-visibility conditions.
- Fire Safety Concerns:
- Fire and Rescue NSW continues to highlight risks associated with e-bike battery fires. Proper charging practices, avoiding overcharging, and protecting batteries from extreme heat are critical safety measures.
