Speaking Up Matters
We shared the good news that our advocacy had paid off and rideable connections to and around the Sydney Airport would be developed and enhanced as part of new development plans. Bicycle NSW, BIKEast, Councils, riders and community members spoke up, and together we’ve achieved once-in-a-generation change for bike riders.
Sydney Airport Development
The Sydney Airport development now includes Commonwealth Conditions of Consent that require the delivery of The Orbital, which we had previously been told was impossible. This means thousands of people who travel via, or work at, the domestic airport terminal will be able to get there by bike. It also means that everyone who needs to travel past the airport to reach their destination will be able to cycle safely, separate from the expected increases in heavy freight traffic.
You can find out more about the Sydney Gateway Project here and take a simulated ride through journey of the planned cycleway. Over the coming months detailed plans will be drafted and there will be opportunities to have your say on designs. We encourage you to share your thoughts as we know this project impacts so many people who live or work in, or visit the area.
“We are really grateful so many riders spoke up, because together you’ve helped ensure active travel has been preserved and prioritised,” said Bicycle NSW General Manager of Public Affairs, Bastien Wallace.
“We look forward to sharing plans, and to your ideas to help make sure this project delivers for everyone,” said Bastien.
