Going electric can transform your riding experience

A bit of power from a battery makes it easier to tackle hills and longer distances - and ride for more trips, more often.

While pedal assistance is less strenuous than powering a traditional bike, using an e-bike still provides the opportunity for exercise and fresh air.

E-bikes offer numerous additional benefits, including reducing congestion, making connections to pubic transport seamless, and providing an affordable mode of transport for people of all ages and fitness levels. They are also seriously good tools for reducing emissions, with studies showing e-bikes will get Australia to Net Zero 10 times faster that EVs.

What are the rules around e-bikes?

In Australia, e-bikes can provide pedal-assistance up to 25km/h, which allows 80–100km riding range on one battery charge. The latest information what is legal in NSW can be found here.

Lithium-ion batteries are a growing fire risk in New South Wales. It is important to understand the risks and be prepared if things go wrong. Find out more about safe charging on the NSW Fire and Rescue website.

It is good idea to insure your e-bike against theft. Bicycle NSW has partnered with Oz Insurance to provide tailored e-bike insurance policies that cater to the special needs of bicycle users.

For more information on our work influencing e-bike policy and regulations, visit the Transforming Transport with E-Mobility campaign page.

And please become a Bicycle NSW Member to help us keep the conversation going with all levels of government. Our small team is dedicated to making NSW better for bike riding. But we need your assistance!

Embrace the future of cycling with e-bikes and enjoy a more efficient and enjoyable ride!
