When riding a bike on roads and public paths in New South Wales, you must adhere to specific road rules to ensure safety and harmony on the roads. These rules apply regardless of the type of bike you are riding, including permitted e-bikes.

Cyclists are required to wear an approved helmet, use bike lanes where available, and follow the same road rules as other vehicles, including stopping at red lights and stop signs. Additionally, cyclists can ride two abreast but no more than 1.5 meters apart and must give hand signals when turning right.  Currently, riders need to hop off their bike and walk across intersection with a pedestrian crossing, unless at a signalised crossing where a bicycle lantern is provided.

Have you read the NSW Government Bicycle Riders' Handbook? Head to Transport for NSW's Safety and rules for bicycle riders page to download a copy, and explore valuable tips on road safety, bicycle maintenance, road rules and the legal aspects of riding your bicycle.

Another excellent resource is the Redfern Legal website. Dive in for clear explanations of how road rules, the law and the legal system in NSW affects people riding.

This video from Northern Beaches Council is a fantastic introduction to the road rules that apply to bike riders. The content is also aimed at car drivers, so please share the link with any driver who you think needs to brush up on the rules!
