Membership is the top priority for Bicycle NSW - our Members are the reason we exist

We are pleased to announce that Yvonne Poon has been appointed as the new Membership Coordinator for Bicycle NSW. Yvonne started in the role on 17 March and has been busy getting across emails, phone calls, and all things membership.

Yvonne is very well known to the Sydney advocacy community!

Despite loving cycling as a child, she dropped the concept of cycling during her teens and 20s, even urging her uni friends not to cycle because it was too dangerous. After discovering the health, cost, and time benefits of cycling for transport, Yvonne has come full circle. She now believes that bicycles will change the world!

And she is one of the busiest volunteer active transport advocates in Sydney, with loads of ongoing projects underway with BIKEast, WalkSydney and Better Streets.

She is an ardent champion of everyday cycling and hugely thankful for all the people, especially the women and the BIKEast team, who mentored, supported, and taught her everything she knows. She is eternally grateful to all the advocates who have worked so hard for better cycling conditions in NSW - past, current and future.

Yvonne's strong community efforts were recognised in 2019, when she was awarded the Transport for NSW Travel Choices Individual Champion award.

Check out this fantastic video to learn more about the activities Yvonne has been involved with, to grow cycling in Sydney over the last 12 years.

Yvonne's biggest cycling moments include being a Liv brand ambassador, promoting women cycling in Sydney, protesting the destruction of the College St cycleway and the Get Together campaign fines, and saving the Alexandra Canal cycleway.

In 2024 she spoke on behalf of WalkSydney at the 2024 NSW Inquiry on A framework for performance reporting and driving wellbeing outcomes in NSW. Her words were quoted, supporting the WHO guidelines warning against focusing in traditional metrics like GDP growth, and urging instead to focus on disparities of distribution and inequities.
