Below are hypothetical examples to demonstrate the breadth and diversity of coverage and the importance of having bike riders insurance.
What if I fall off my bike and am hurt?
Bicycle NSW Membership includes the Best Bike Riders insurance available in NSW. If you’re out riding and are injured, whether it’s your own fault or not, you’re covered. Your members insurance includes cover for all non-medicare procedures, like Chiro, Physio, Dental, Ambulance and more, plus if you have private health insurance, use that and have the excess covered by your members insurance too. Plus you even have a broken bones benefit.
Not only does your members insurance cover you for the physical treatment, but for all the elements that surround a physical injury. You’ve got cover for loss of income if you can’t go back to work for a while, counselling benefits if you’ve witnessed or experienced a traumatic event while riding, assistance in the home and if you’re bed ridden, travel costs and a chauffeur plan if you’re unable to transport yourself, as well as rehabilitation costs, out of pocket expenses, and if you’re injured riding overseas, you’re covered there too.
And while we don’t wish it on anyone, your members insurance includes capital benefits, permanent disability and death as well as funeral benefits.
What if my child has a bike accident and is injured?
A Household Membership is perfect for you and your bike riding kids, teenagers, University students, spouse, de facto or even just a friend or housemate. Covering up to 2 adults and up to 6 dependent children who live at home aged up to 21, or aged up to 25 if studying full time while living at home, a Household membership has you all covered for one low price.
If you’re all out riding one day and something happens to one of your dependent children while riding their bike, not only will the non-medicare costs be covered by your members insurance, but you as a parent, or your child as a student can access some helpful benefits. A student assistance benefit means your studious bike rider can still keep their grades while they recover, the parental inconvenience benefit can step in when you’re time as a parent is dedicated to your child’s recovery, The home help, bed care, travel costs and counselling benefits all still apply and the sense of calm knowing that we’ve got your back will mean you can focus on getting your child, teenager or student back up and rolling on two wheels.
When your student or dependent child reaches the age of 25, or moves out of home, they can take out a discounted Concession Membership to ensure they are still secure when out riding their bike. Many parents like to buy their grown up children a membership as a gift, because we all know young people can feel invincible, but we’d all feel more secure knowing someone’s got them covered.
What if I already have Medicare and Private Health Insurance?
Terrific! Having Medicare is a fantastic resource for Australian’s and can be a literal life-saver. A Bicycle NSW Membership includes insurance that covers Non-Medicare covered treatment like Chiro, Physio, Dental, Rehabilitation as well as Ambulance and other services. So depending on just the Medicare system might not cover you enough in some scenarios.
Having your own Private Health Insurance also opens up many options to have extras covered, to use Private hospitals or to be a Private patient in a public hospital. However, Private Health Insurance doesn’t always cover everything and has limits on extras cover, can have and excess or gap fees for staying in a hospital and for some specialist services. Your Bicycle NSW Membership allows you to use your Private Health Insurance first, and then claim back the excesses, gap fees and other costs not covered on your Private Health Insurance policy. They are great in tandem if you find yourself in a serious incident.
What if I run into another road user and injure them?
While bike riders do need to follow the road rules, sometimes accidents happen when other road users do unexpected things or the road surface causes issues. And when you’re on a shared path or in a high pedestrian area, sometimes you’re taken by surprise and a collision occurs. Your Bicycle NSW membership includes Third Party Liability cover which comes in to play in these scenarios. When you’re out on your bike, whether it’s your fault or just a result of circumstances, you’re covered with a $20 million Public Liability Insurance that can help a third party recover from any spills or incident with you. Our friendly team at V-Insurance will assist you throughout the process and take the worry out of your ride. Use of your PLI insurance carries an excess of $750, which is the lowest available on any bike riders insurance in NSW.
What if I damage someone else’s’ property, like their car?
Surprisingly damaging someone else’s property accidentally is more common than you think! It could be that a pothole, or unexpected maneuver by another road user sends you off course and in to a parked vehicle. Or you could be riding with a group and come across a road hazard that sends you off course to clip a fellow bike rider causing them to crash and damage their bike. In both of these instances and many more, your Bicycle NSW membership includes Third Party Liability cover just for these accidents. Whether it’s your fault or just a result of circumstances, you’re covered with a $20 million Public Liability Insurance that can help a third party repair or replace their property damaged in an incident with you. Our friendly team at V-Insurance will assist you throughout the process and take the worry out of your ride. Use of your PLI insurance carries an excess of $750, which is the lowest available on any bike riders insurance in NSW.

What if I want to ride where there are no cars?
While bike riders are allowed to ride on designated shared paths away from road traffic, and many cities across NSW are now installing dedicated, separated cycleways to protect riders from traffic, the best experience is on the days dedicated to bikes! Our flagship event, Spring Cycle is held every October and is the only bike riding event that closes a lane of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and dedicate it to bikes! Taking in a number of cycleways and areas away from vehicle traffic, Spring Cycle is the perfect opportunity to get out with friends and family and really celebrate cycling away from the nerves of city traffic.
Our signature women’s bike ride event, Gear Up Girl, is held every March and delivers a fun, safe bike riding experience designed to encourage more women to try riding. Taking in the beautiful cycleways of the Southern Sydney area, this friendly event is perfect to enjoy riding in a no-pressure scenario with an achievable distance for even the newer rider.
Plus, Bicycle NSW members get discounted entry to our Flagship and Signature events, as well as receiving discounted entries to partner bike riding events to give you many opportunities to get out on your bike in a safe environment.
