NSW e-bike battery rules and regulations

In 2025, new product safety requirements will apply to lithium-ion e-micromobility devices in NSW.

These requirements by the NSW Department of Fair Trading have been established to reduce fire, injury and deaths from battery / e-micromobility devices.

These are separate to the rules around what devices can be ridden on the road.

The new steps for manufacturers include

1. Testing
2. Certification

This will apply to all products defined as e-micromobility under Fair Trading, sold (and hired out) in NSW after 1 August 2025.

This does not affect e-bikes purchased prior to 1 August 2025 (unless you are hiring them to others).
