The theme for this year’s NSW Seniors Festival (formerly known as ‘Senior’s Week’) is ‘Reconnect’. There will be many activities held throughout NSW during the festival, including some great bike riding events, aimed at reconnecting ‘seniors’ (anyone over 60).

Seniors couple connecting through bike riding

Below is a selection of bike events being held during the NSW Seniors Festival, which will run from Friday 25 March until Sunday 3 April. Bike riding is a fantastic way of (re)connecting, having fun, being active and exploring different community programs.

Is your Seniors Festival bike riding event not on our list? Please let us know and we will share it on our Facebook page.

The importance of advocating for bicycle riding

Bicycle NSW has previously commented on the need to address the mobility requirements of older adults. It is inspiring to see the NSW Government continue to support initiatives like the NSW Seniors Festival.

It is important to ensure that plans to improve active transport opportunities are implemented, such as those specified in the transport plan as part of the Future Transport 2056 framework. Although interest in bike riding may be increasing as people enjoy active ageing, in many NSW communities, the infrastructure does not exist to currently support this. There is an ongoing need for safe, separated infrastructure of a quality that makes bike riding accessible for and appealing to older bike riders.

“It is important for the government to understand and plan for the needs of elderly citizens so that families can stay active, healthy and independent for as long as possible,“ said Peter McLean, Bicycle NSW CEO.

Bicycle NSW encourages all BUGs, Members and anyone with an interest in healthy ageing to make their own submissions, highlighting the needs and concerns most relevant to their community.
