Recently the Western Sydney Cycle Network were planning their annual weekend away. Canberra had been their destination of choice for 4 years and they wanted a change.

In March, 25 Members along with their partners headed to Norah Head on the NSW Central Coast, specifically to access both Lake Munmorah and Lake Budgewoi.

They pull out a call to the local BUG, the Central Coast Bicycle User Group (CC BUG) asking for ride suggestions. They went one step further and organised ride leaders to guide each ride.

On Friday afternoon CC BUG Ride Leader, 'Mac', led WSCN out to scenic Frazer Beach for an approx 33 km round trip, where they BBQ'd on the beach before returning.

This ride involved riding from the lake over the headland to the ocean, taking in some stunning views in Munmorah State Conservation Park.

Saturday morning came and they had the pleasure of Bec leading, accompanied by Will who is visually impaired on the back of the CC BUG’s tandem.

Bec told the group how the CC BUG got involved with visually impaired riders and how Vision Australia helped trained them to lead a rider.

“It is truly inspirational to watch,” Karen from the WSCN told us.

For Sunday Christina and Neil led the group 32km North along Lake Budgewoi, out to Blue Haven, stopping for breakfast and back. It was the most scenic of the rides and it highly recommended.

“The weekend was a brilliant collaboration between WSCN and CC BUG. Being led around the lakes with local bike track and cafe knowledge was invaluable. We have extended our eagerness to reciprocate their hospitality, let's hope they take us up on our offer!” said Karen.

If you are keen to do rides in a new area, we highly recommend reaching out to your local BUG or cycling group. You can find a list of BUGs on our website here.
