From Sydney to the 'Gong
The MS Gong Ride is one of NSW’s most iconic cycling events. Since its creation in 1980, the Gong Ride starting in Sydney and ending in Wollongong, has gained popularity and importance, appealing to thousands of attendees each year. MS Australia is the event organiser and seeks to raise funds and awareness for Multiple Schlerosis (MS), a chronic disease that affects the central nervous system.
The beginnings
1980 marked the very first Sydney to Gong Ride with a small number of participants. The concept was to develop a fun, yet challenging cycling event that could unite people for a common cause. The initial route covered approximately 82km, starting from Sydney and finishing in Wollongong.
Despite its humble beginnings, the event quickly gained momentum, thanks to the gorgeous scenery and fun route through the Royal National Park.
Building momentum and expansion
With the passing years, the event matured and the Gong Ride expanded in both the number of attendees, and also in its scope. The event drew a larger variety of skill levels, including professional cyclists, intermediate riders, and families. The route was redeveloped to improve the bicycling experience, including more sights and challenging areas.

Fundraising and Awareness
One of the most enduring accomplishments of the Gong Ride is its ability to generate funds and awareness for Multiple Sclerosis. MS Australia has utilised the funds raised to support much-needed research, provide services, and advocate for those living with MS. Over the years, the ride has raised millions of dollars, making a notable difference in people and families of those whose lives have been impacted by MS.
Community engagement and participation
The Sydney to Gong Ride has always stood for so much more than just a fun cycling event; it is the epitome of community and togetherness. Attendees usually cycle in honour of their friends or family members with MS, adding a deeply personal and emotional connection to the ride. The sense of community is powerful, with riders and supporters all getting together to fight MS.
Volunteering is also a large part of this event with up to 400 volunteers supporting the 10,000 riders across a range of roles including assisting participants with information and registration to cheering on teams along the course. There are roles based in Sydney, Wollongong and everywhere in-between.

Continuing to evolve and grow
The MS Gong Ride is a great example of what a passionate and resilient community can do when they come together with a focused purpose. Over the past 40 years or so, it has changed from a small cycling event to a major fundraiser and awareness campaign for MS. The ride's history is full of achievements, memorable times, and motivating stories, all of which contribute to its sustainable legacy.
