When approaching a pedestrian crossing, traffic light or children’s crossing, it can be confusing for bike riders to know what to do.

If riding on the road:

  • bike riders must obey the traffic light signals i.e. stop on red and go on green
  • must give way to pedestrians at the pedestrian crossing

If approaching a traffic light or pedestrian/children’s crossing from a shared, bike or foot path, bike riders must dismount and walk across. Riders who can legally ride on a footpath in NSW, must also dismount to cross.

If a bicycle lantern is present, a bike rider can cycle over the crossing. Riders must obey any other traffic signals and also be conscious of pedestrians when crossing.
