Bicycle NSW has worked closely with Bicycle User Groups (BUGs) and Councils over many years to ensure that the huge Sydney Gateway Project, which creates a new motorway connecting Westconnex at St Peters Interchange with the two terminals at Sydney Airport, delivers really positive outcomes for active transport.
The advocacy efforts of the cycling community helped ensure that a high-quality Active Transport Link (ATL) was provided. The ATL includes the fantastic shared user path along the north side of the Alexandra Canal, an elegant new bridge over the canal, a newly-opened connection to the Domestic Terminal, and rest areas that are great for plane spotting!
Although we are delighted by the ATL, connections to the wider active transport network were not resolved.
In 2022, Bicycle NSW wrote an issues paper that asked stakeholders to review the possible options for a cycleway heading north-west to Sydenham and a high-quality pedestrian route from Domestic Terminal to Mascot town centre.
Unfortunately, construction of the motorway raced ahead and future links towards Sydenham will be hard to achieve.
We are now advocating for the extension of the Alexandra Canal Cycleway, improved walking and cycling links to Mascot town centre and secure bike storage at T2/T3.
Site visits and discussions with Transport for NSW and the Transport Minister continue. It is essential not to miss the opportunity to deliver amazing regional cycling routes that allow workers and travellers to reach the airport from every direction!
