The Sydney North Region includes everything North of the Parramatta River, South of the Hawkesbury River and East from the Hills district. The region is distinctive due to the hilly terrain and the relatively small number of major arterial roads that are essential to the transport network.  These two factors make it difficult for bicycle users to get around efficiently.  The arterial roads often make use of the ridge lines, leaving bicycle users to search for routes on quiet streets that are often very hilly.

The train network in the region consists of the North Shore Line and the Northern Suburbs line which both present opportunities for the development of rail trails.  The flat grade of the railway lines and the connectivity offered by the routes, which naturally connect the major trip-generators, make the construction of bicycle paths adjacent to the rail easement a huge opportunity for the improvement of the bicycle network.
