Bicycle NSW has applied for funding to develop a navigation app to enable people to plan safe journeys by bike.  We realise this will also help people who use wheelchairs to plan their journeys.

Most mapping applications are designed for cars and not the needs of people looking for safe routes to travel by bike or wheelchair.  This can result in riders being directed onto busy roads, whilst shared paths and off-road cycleways are ignored.

As part of developing the app, we want to ensure it meets the needs of children under 16 and their families, who are allowed to ride on footpaths.  This should help people who use wheelchairs and wheeled mobility assistance to plan their journeys.

Bicycle NSW has applied for development funding through the My Community Project grants program.  We will begin with the City of Sydney and expand across NSW.

Now we need your help to vote for our project.  You are eligible to vote if you are 16 years of age or older, live in the City of Sydney area and have a Medicare Card.

You will be prompted to log into your MyService NSW Account, or set one up if you don’t have one.  The link to our project can be found on the dashboard:

“We know 70% of people would ride a bicycle more often, but they don’t feel safe to do so,” said Bicycle NSW General Manager of Public Affairs, Bastien Wallace.

“Developing this app will help make it easier to find safe routes and offer the health benefits and congestion reductions that everyone needs,” said Bastien.
