Bicycle NSW was pleased to attend today’s Cycling Without Age trishaw and program launch event jointly supported by Woollahra and City of Sydney Councils.
Lord Mayor of Sydney Ms Clover Moore, and the Mayor of Woollahra Mr Peter Cavanagh were proud to launch the trishaw having jointly committed funds for its purchase. The Danish Consul General Mr Michael Thomas Hansen, representatives of the Montefiore Home, Holdsworth Community Services and BIKEast also attended as contributors to project success.
These modified e-bikes allow a pilot to ride with two passengers. They are invaluable for allowing nursing home residents, who are unable to ride a bike anymore themselves, to enjoy the recreational benefits and fresh air of a ride.
Adrian Boss of BIKEast has been a staunch supporter of, and advocate for, Cycling Without Age and the introduction of these bikes into the recreation programs of aged care facilities. Sydney joins Murwillumbah, Newcastle, Western Australia and Melbourne who all have bikes being used for similar purposes.
Passengers buckled up their seat-belts and enjoyed rides through Rushcutters Bay Park as the volunteer pilots demonstrated how the bikes worked.
“This has been a complicated undertaking to get these bikes imported from Denmark, to train pilots, organise funds and everything leading up to today,” said General Manager of Public Affairs, Bastien Wallace.
“Bicycle NSW acknowledges the tireless work Arian Boss and members of BIKEast have put in to make this a reality,” said Bastien.
