Bike North is back in the saddle! At Bike North (a Bicycle NSW affiliated Bicycle User Group (BUG)), members love to ride together, chat together, be together. Last month, after repeated cancellations due to Covid-19 and after months of rain, Bike North was finally able to hold their ‘Big Rides Day’, which is usually held annually.

Bike North's Big Rides Day

With more than 100 riders registered, this social event was truly a big day for coming together and sharing a love for bike riding. To accommodate this huge group of different riders, experienced Ride Leaders had organised nine separate rides ranging in distance and difficulty. Each of these rides started in a different location but all rides finished at Bicentennial Park for a shared lunch.

The ‘Big Rides Day’ also included an award ceremony recognising the important contribution of three Bike North members. Wilhelmina and Gerrit Hagen were recognised for their service to Bike North’s rides program and for their roles as ‘sweep’ and Ride Leader. Darryn Capes-Davis (also a Bicycle NSW Board Member) was recognised for his contribution to the organisation in general and IT in particular.

This day, described as ‘as sunny as the spirits of the riders’, would not have been possible without the volunteer work by Bike North’s Ride Leaders and its Social Committee. In Gerrit Hagen’s words: “There is nothing better than cycling with people who enjoy the same experience.”

Bicycle NSW would like to encourage all Members who are keen to ride with a group of recreational, social riders to check out the full list of Bicycle NSW accredited BUGs. All rides organised by BUGs are led by Bicycle NSW accredited Ride Leaders ensuring safe, enjoyable and inclusive rides. Their rides can be found here
